أبو الهول
كلمة أبو الهول تعني في الديانة المصرية القديمة أسد بجسم إنسان حارس أبواب العالم السفلي تماثيل أبو الهول كانت تصنع من الحجارة وكان يمثل قوة الفرعون وكانت مهمته حراسة مقابره أما في عهد المملكة الحديثة فقد وضع على حافتي الطرق المؤدية إلى مداخل المعابد نحت تمثال أبو الهول بمنطقة جنوب الجيزة (وهي منطقة الدلتا بالمصر السفلى)
من الحجر الجيري، حيث وجدت مقاطع الحجر التي استعملت في بناء الاهرمات ومن المرجح أنه كان في الأصل مغطى بطبقة من الجص وملون. ولا زالت آثار الألوان الأصلية ظاهرة بجانب إحدى أذنيه. ويبلغ طول أبو الهول حوالي 73.5 متراً ويبلغ ارتفاعه 20 متراً أما عرضه 14مترا برأسه متجه نحو الشرق. جسمه جسم إنسان وجهه تجسيد للفرعون منكارع وتغطى رأس التمثال غطاء الرأس الملكي المسمى بالنمس مهمته حراسة الموقع الجسم و الرأس نحت من نفس الحجر أما السيقان فقد اضيفى بالبناء وتوجد أسس معبد بني على الأغلب في نفس الفترة في العصور التالية، تسببت العواصف الرملية والعوامل الأخرى في تآكل بعض أجزاء التمثال المختلفة وخاصة الرقبة وبعض الأجزاء في الجانب الأيسر والقدمين بالإضافة إلى الجزء الخلفي للتمثال. كما كان له لحية مستعارة طويلة، وهى مكسورة الآن توجد في المتحف البريطاني الذي يرفض إعادتها إلى مصر أما أنف التمثال فهي مكسورة أيضاً، غالباً منذ عصر المماليك، الذين قاموا باستخدامها كهدف للنيشان. وفى فترة لاحقة تم تغطية أبو الهول بقوالب صغيرة من الحجر الجيري تم تثبيتها على سطحه لحمايته، ثم تم تبديلها حديثاً.وبين مخالب أبو الهول توجد لوحة تروى قصة حلم للملك تحتمس الرابع تسمى لوحة الحلم.
